Default Pain control and sleeping at night

My sweet CHance seem to have problems at night with pain control. Vet suggested sleeping pill, but that completely knocked him out for 22 hours. I tried over the counter Melatonin. This allows him to rest and the pain medicine to work. Seems to be working very well. Research shows very little side effects with melatonin.
