I have a general Question about nsaids ( anti inflamatories) the vet had put aussie on medcam to relieve her pain from O.A. of the knees ( about one month ago) she has dealt with this since being a puppy and now is on this because he felt she was in great pain (xrays show bone on bone ) surgery is out of the question for me-so my question is - has any one had experience with this and whats your opinion ? got any ideas ? we know everything is trial and error- here I am trying to make everything healthly and I am not so sure about medcam I think its upseting her stomach or something - because now when I give her her food at night she is starting to refuse it - unless I really add one of her favorites - she doesn't get medcam in the morning feeding

Hi
My dog Holly was on Metacam, in liquid form (not sure if this is the same as what you're talking about) for at least a year to help her manage pain from having a torn ACL surgically repaired (TPLO). She developed some arthritis in the joint several years after the surgery. We always gave it to her with her evening meal and it never seemed to bother her. Nor did there seem to be any adverse effects to her liver/kidneys. Are you at the point where you are titrating (reducing) the level to find out how little you need to use? Celine |

celine - I started to post a reply yesterday but I am still learning to navigate this whole forum
![]() -thank you for your response - I was told to keep her on it permanently because the O.A. is so advanced - so I don't think we are looking for a happy medium here - I just felt uncomfortable with some thing that has the potential to upset her stomach more - but getting input from you put me at ease - something like- positive reinforcement - I know we all are on a journey -and I get so much support coming on this site looking , listening to others and being able to ask questions without feeling stupid . she seems to be doing better mobility wise - as you know the dosage given by weight and I don't see the side effects like a few years ago(upset stomach refusal to eat ect...)as much - thanks again andrea

I was prescribed this medication for my dog a couple years back. I opted to go with natural anti-inflammatories instead. I found a cool web site with a good list of natural remedies for dogs. I have tried several of them, and have seen results. I think this is a better way to go in order to avoid the potential side effects of prescribed medications.

I gave my Yellow Lab Metacam for severe arthritis in his knees and hips, it doesn't do much. I take him out and let him exercise at his own pace (not forced walks). He does better with his weight down. The metacam is expensive and can Also affect the liver. Acupuncture worked great.

i used to give my old girl cassie msm which is a natural remedy and after having her on it for about 3 weeks there was a dramatic improvement and i stopped the medcam as its had so much bad press. it can cause internal bleeding apparently, she had 2 msm a day for 7 years and never looked back. you can get it from holland and barrett about 10-12 quid for 240 caps and i think the buy one get one half price is still going. ive got my cavalier on it as he is accident prone and forever jumping and twisting his nerves/muscles and its helping him. he gets one a day. all the best and google it and you will see what its all about
