I've been looking for answers on line as to what causes mast cell tumors and what, other than cutting the dog up to remove the tumors, can be done to help alleviate this problem. This morning I came across this human disease that seems like it might have common roots with mast cell tumors. Both result in lesions which are itchy and caused by too much histamine. Could this be the human version of the same problem, and if so, would adhering to the dietary suggestions help? If that's the case, are we increasing the problem by giving dogs their pills using cheese or processed meats? Opinions, please.
I am not a medical professional, just the owner of a dog with mast cell tumors who won't give up on looking for answers. Histamine Restricted Diet—ICUS - International Chronic Urticaria Society |

I lost my 6 year old Benny to MCT and I have NO ANSWERS.
He had the best diet prior to getting the tumours and an even better one after he got the cancer. I swear by the CANINE LIFE MUFFINS (cancer formula) to which we added only free-range meats such as ground Bison, Ground Venison, Ground turkey or chicken etc. He did love lightly steamed spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts etc. All vegetables were ORGANIC and we added turmeric to his meals as well as many supplements which were recommended by the "angel" who helped us through this dreadful journey. If you wish to check the muffins and their ingredients this is the link: www.theskyesthelimit.com OR www.westcoastcaninelife.com His diet was completely "grain-free" during the cancer, [b][i]while he was in remission for 8 months and even before the cancer struck him before the age of 4. We never gave him cheese, butter, processed meats, table scraps etc. He should still be ALIVE but he is not! The muffins look good and smell good and Benny loved every meal right up to the last day of his life! I wish I had answers but I do not. I am so sorry for your pain. I know exactly how you are feeling. the hurt is DEEP! My prayers go out to you and don't stop trying to find answers. Blessings, Joanne & Shadow and hugs to Stetson |

I've also given Stetson only top quality food, and have always given him either bottled or filtered water. He comes from show dogs that were screened and re-screened for multiple health problems before being bred, and everything about his health was checked thoroughly before I bought him, so he comes from excellent bloodlines. His treats have been either organic, home made, or bits of safe people food. He loves lettuce and bites of potato. Something has to have set this problem off, and if I can figure it out, maybe it can be stalled or reversed.
Maybe I'm ranting, but if it's like looking for a needle in a haystack, or if the chances are a million to one of finding something, I'll try anyway. There is an answer, something caused this, but whether anyone knows it or ever will know I don't know. |

I know you posted this some time ago but for some reason I'm just reading this now. I totally understand about not giving up. I've never given up on either of my girls and I did find a way to help Abby because of my perserverance. With Lucky, I constantly worry about her MCT reoccuring and find the information you gave interesting. I don't know that she ever receieved any of the foods listed frequently except in the past few months when I've given her cottage cheese while following the Budwig protocol. Even though she only eats homecooked foods now, I will be sure she avoids these foods in the future just to be sure, because like you, it seems like there could be a connection.
Just out of curousity, do you give Stetson Benadryl daily? I recently started giving Lucky 25mg twice daily after speaking with our vet about it. He indicated it couldn't hurt, but there'd been no conclusive research about whether or not it was truly effective... |

Yes, Stetson gets Benedryl and Tagamet twice a day. I talked with a lady who has put mast cell tumors into permanent remission with her plan, and it's a case of so far, so good with Stetson. Here are some links to links on the topic if you want to read about it. She has links in the links for all the scientific stuff about how it works.
