the following is a copy from my postings to another site
We just got the results (2 days ago) of a biopsy. Mid grade lymphoma. Vet says 2 weeks to 2 months. Oncologist says MAYBE another year with chemo. After we stopped crying and picked ourselves up off the floor we made some decisions, we have decided against chemo and will be giving Bruiser Prednisone (vet says it could add a few months). We are also changing his diet to exclude all grains. Last night for dinner they (I have 2 brothers from the same litter) had rare ground beef with finely shredded and steamed carrots, broccoli and red bell pepper, boy they loved that. This morning they had 1/2 cup of cottage cheese with 1tbsp flax-seed oil (smelled like varnish, but they enjoyed the taste). We have done what research we could in the last 2 days and It looks like Bruisers chances are just as good with the new diet (still working on details) as with chemo, and if we are going to lose him I want him to be comfortable and have a steak in his belly. This is what is right for us. we would appreciate any input that you think might benefit Bruisers comfort or health. We love our dog so very much (just stated crying again) and hope we could move this to the success stories area. day 2 adding omega 3 fish oil to his new diet. will be slowly working him up to 8000 mg per day over the next 2 weeks. he will be having rare chicken livers and steamed finely shredded vegetables for dinner. 1/2 pound fresh chicken livers, 2 lg broccoli chunks (flowerets) 1/2 large carrot, 1/4 red bell pepper and 1 1200mg omega 3 fish oil. Oh yeah he had 4 or 5 carrot sticks after diner. Day 3 Ordered K9 Immunity & K9 Transfer Factor. should be here so he can get started tomorrow. 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 tbsp flax-seed oil and 1200 mg omega 3 fish oil for breakfast. They each had 1/2 lb salmon just seared on the outside with steamed red bell pepper, yellow squash and 1200 mg fish oil Day 4 Cottage cheese, flax-seed oil and 1200 mg omega 3 for breakfast, K9 Immunity & K9 Transfer Factor did not come, oven roasted chicken w/broccoli and red peppers for dinner and 1200 mg omega 3 Day 5 added 2400 mg of omega 3 fish oil to Bruisers breakfast. Got K9 Immunity & K9 Transfer Factor today started Bruiser at lunch time, Ground Turkey w shredded carrots and celery 1 raw egg and 1200 mg omega 3 Day 6 Cottage cheese and 2400 mg omega 3 and flax-seed oils breakfast w/K9 Immunity & K9 Transfer Factor, Roasted chicken w/steamed red pepper, broccoli/ 1200 mg omega 3 and K9 Immunity for dinner (darn forgot the egg) Day 7 Cottage cheese and flax-seed oil w/2400 mg omega 3 fish oil, Took Bruiser to vet to get stitches removed but was told he has developed an infection so they were left in and antibiotics prescribed, Dinner was very rare salmon, steamed broccoli and red bell pepper w/2400 mg omega 3 VET VISIT 8/19/2010 Bruiser has developed some infection around his stitches (biopsy) and will be taking some antibiotics. The good news is He has not gained or lost any weight at all and he still has a great apatite, he seems energetic, his muscle wasting seems to have reduced a little and he seems to be breathing better Day 8 Cottage cheese breakfast, added a lunch (started forgetting a few things to add at breakfast) lunch 2 raw eggs w/2400 mg omega 3, dinner very rare ground beef w/vegetable and eggs Day 9 Cottage cheese breakfast, Lunch 2 raw eggs w/2400 mg omega 3, Dinner ground Turkey steamed broccoli and red bell pepper raw egg w/2400 mg omega 3 Day 10 Well you see were I'm going with this. I will keep feeding him this new diet from now on and post any results here Day 12 Vet Visit.. Bruiser got his stitches removed, Infection is cleared up. Vet said he looks good. He is very energetic and seems happy. We roasted a whole turkey for him and he couldn't eat his dinner fast enough. I am going to switch to raw meats but have only been able to do very rare so far (i have a mental block) |

Hi. I am here because of my six year old beagle - Boomer (what is it with beagles and B names
). He has anal sac carcinoma. Like you, we have switched to a grain free diet although it sounds like Boomer would much prefer Bruiser's diet! On the advice of others here on the board I have added C-caps and artemisinin to his regimen. There is a lot of info on the artemisinin here, read it all before you start. I was giving it at the wrong time for a few months. Boomer also gets Rimadyl twice a day. I had him in last week to get his remaining gland expressed and the vet says he is doing very well.Continued time with your beagle boy. |

Good Luck. This is a terrible journey but there can be a good outcome. Hopefully there will be for Bruiser. Blessings, Joanne & Shadow |

Beaglechaser & Boomer, Joanne and Shadow
Thank you so very much for your help and good thoughts. I will be checking out the C-caps and artemisinin as recomended by Beaglechaser. What are they for? Also I think its important to note to anyone reading this the flax-seed oil, for the cottage cheese, should be bought from the refrigerated section of the store (not the shelf). I made that mistake the first day and that is why it smelled like varnish eg. spoiled. I had no idea, there was no experation date on the bottle. Please keep a happy thoughts of your dog in your heart. I will be hoping for the best for both Shadow and Beagle Boy Boomer John |

Great looking Beagles. Such wonderful, loving, funny and social dogs. I got lucky and got a smart one to go along with all the other good things. They are not on the top of the scale for being very bright. They make up for it with their unconditional love, attitude and mischievous ways. My Dublin is also a Tri colored Beagle with ticking. Dublin is a big boy and was very strong and overweight for the most part. To many cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets I would guess. :rolleyes Seeing him they way he is now really hurts. He lost over 10 pounds in 7 weeks. Mostly because I had him on a diet just before he started showing signs he was sick. Anyway.....Love your Bruiser every second you get. I cant even stand sitting here typing knowing I could be laying next to Dublin. So , off I go to be with him and tell him how much I love him and enjoy his company. Best wishes for Bruiser and yourself. My prayers are with you both.

If your Vet is open today just call and ask what they think it might be. He might just have gas or be constipated. I am very much like you that I worry before I know what is wrong. I start thinking the worst and it is usually nothing to worry about. I am training myself not to worry so much. Not easy but LOL training myself.
