Default Cain - New to the group

Cain is my 13 year old female yellow lab mix.
Cain was diagnosed with left maxillary squamous cell carcinoma in Aug 2009. Surgery would have been extensive, inclusive of possibly losing her left eye, and having to undergo radiation treatment after surgery. We opted for treatment of Palladia and Piroxicam. Cain’s treatment started with Palladia and Piroxicam on alternate days and obtained stable disease (if not partial response) with the treatment. During this time Cain became a very picky eater, would only eat if hand fed, and was experiencing diarrhea. In May 2010 Cain had been off all meds for 2 months due to side effects and was still refusing to eat. Cain subsequently had dental surgery to remove 7 teeth. At that time, we also learned the tumor had grown. Cain currently is on Palladia, at the lowest dose for her weight, to try to minimize side effects. Since starting Cain on Palladia and Piroxicam finding food Cain will consistently eat is extremely difficult. Additionally, Cain will only eat if she is lying down on the back seat of our van. She is currently hand fed Evo (moistened with spring water) and Vital by Freshpet.
Does anyone have any experience with dealing with squamous cell? Any suggestions of anything else we could try would be appreciated.
Thank you all for your time.

i'm sorry sorry about cain. my dog cody is just recovering from mast cell cancer. there is a ton of info here so cruise around and you will find all kind of suggested supplements and whatnot. as far as appetite - is your dog on prednisone? usually once they start prednisone they are ravenous it is hard to stop them from eating EVERYTHING. it also helps mask the pain and discomfort. i think even the post below yours says that when the dog started pred it is eating very well. best of luck to you and cain in your fight!
