My shih-tzu Cookie has a large mass (cancer) on her liver. The vet tried to remove it (three weeks ago) and couldn't as it was on the middle of her liver. He told me she had two weeks to live. She had fluid build-up so she has since gone back to the vet to be drained. Last visit he told me she had days. She is not in any pain and was eating well up to two weeks ago. I cook her food, chicken or turkey with a little broccoli. Tried k-9 immunity, vitamins, milk thistle , alaskan salmon oil etc. but when she stopped eating couldn't get any of it down her. Took her to a new vet who gave her a shot of cortisone and did some accupucture on her. He put her on some appetite stimulants, steriods and ip6. She came home like a new dog, laughing rolling around and eating like crazy. Yesterday she had a good day. This morning she wouldn't eat, had to force her meds down her throat. Finally I cooked some chicken and she ate. I'm suppose to go on a cruise Sept 5 and really can't go unless I see she will eat on a regular basis. In my heart I want her to live another 3 years but hope for a year. She is 13 which I don't think is old. My male shih-tzu is almost 15 and in good health except for some hearing and seeing issues. My last dog lived to be 18. Someone had to figure a way to make dogs live longer. The pain of losing ones animal is unbearable. Cookie is the sweetest, kindest, gentle dog I have ever owned. Even the vet remarked how good and sweet she was. She has never complained about anything in her life, unlike her brother who wines and barks for every little thing (still love him to pieces but he is a pain).

I'm sorry about your sweet pet, of course you will not let her suffer and she will let you know when she is ready to go. For me, my dog had had a good day, took a long walk and ate well. Next morning, he wouldnt eat and just breathed with quick shallow breaths, not suffering but it was the beginning of the end. I had promised him I would not let him suffer and hard as it was, I kept my word.
Enjoy every minute you have withe your sweet dog and we are here for support. We have all been through it. TJ |

Cookie is adorable and her picture tells how sweet she is. I am sorry to hear she has cancer and as TJ said, love her and treasure all the moments you have with her.
She will definitely let you know when she cannot cope anymore. Dogs hide their pain very well. Benny had a good morning his final day, but when he lay down in the cool April grass with his cleaned off marrow bone and let a squirrel walk by because he had no strength left to chase it, we knew it was time. His tumours were open and bleeding and his ears were back. He was 6. God Bless you at this very difficult time. Blessings, Joanne & Shadow |

thanks for all the support. Cookie is doing well, alert and up and about and eating like crazy. First I can't get her to eat now I can't get her to stop. I've never lost a dog so young, 6 is just to soon, so sorry you had to go through that. I've been lucky, my first dog lived to be 18. My male shih-tzu is almost 15 and cookie is 13.

I hope Cookie continues to eat well and enjoy every moment of her life. Dogs live in the moment unlike us. Love her, hug her, appreciate every moment with her and I hope you have her for many more moments.
Blessings, Joanne & Shadow
