Cain is a 7 y/o male Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Three weeks ago he developed an ear irritation we assumed was an infection. Before we could get him into the vet 2 days later, the ear had develop a bloody discharge. Our vet was unable to examine the ear canal on the first visit due to the amount of discharge. We brought him home with ear rinse and antibiotics.

A week later we were seeing no progress. The vet attempted to clean the ear canal but encountered a mass. By this time we were seeing signs of Horner's syndrome, the eye on the affected side was sinking into the socket. We we're referred to UT vet school. The initital examine confirmed a mass in the ear canal and we were scheduled for total ear canal ablation (TECA). The day of the scheduled survey a CT was performed to verify the size of the mass. Unforunately the CT reveiled the mass in the ear canal was only the tip of the iceberg. It extended into the soft tissue on that side of the skull and into bone. Due to the size, the tumor has been deemed inoperable.

A biopsy was taken but we have not received results. In the last 48-72 hours the mass has impacted more nerves resulting in laryngeal paralysis. Eating, drinking, and breathing are all difficult. We hope the biopsy tells us something but this tumor seems to be growing at a very fast rate. At this point we are just trying to make the most out of the time we have left together.

I am so sorry about your precious dog. It's so hard to watch them decline. Just love him as much as you can, he feels it.
