i am new to this and need alot of support. my name is stacey and my loving dog is named sabbath. he was dia with melanoma cancer on december 29, 2009. so far it has been a challenge everyday with emotions, feeding, sleeping, caring, and decisions. i am always blaming myself for the cause of his cancer. if i would have done things differently he wouldn't be in this position. i have been reading ted schnecks book and it has helped me to cope with the stress. by biggest fear it the feeding, yesterday he ate nothing. i tried several different kinds of meats, new dog food, but nothing. does anyone have any suggestions on how to get your dog to eat?
thanks stacey |

First of all WELCOME to this wonderful place where there is so much help and very compassionate people who will listen and share and offer suggestions on what works or did work for them with their puppies.
I am so sorry that you had to come here because you got the dreaded diagnosis of cancer in you beloved best friend. You might want to check out the posts on Food and Nutrition and Supplements and Holistic treatments. I personally fed Benny a Canine Life Muffin (cancer formula) which he loved. I added steamed broccoli and sometimes steamed carrots or spinach to his meals and he also enjoyed boiled chicken livers, chicken breast sauteed in a little olive oil and sprinkled with turmeric which is an excellent "antioxidant" spice. He liked cottage cheese with a little cold-pressed flaxseed oil (keep in the refrigerator.) A number of supplements worked for Benny, but you should check with your vet as to what would work or be recommended for Sabbath.1 Wild Salmon oil capsule was added to Benny's evening meal and he also took Artemisinin and Chinese herbs, Co Q-10, modified citrus pectin. However, I URGE you to check with your vet before buying any of these supplements for Sabbath and if you can arrange to get an Holistic Vet you will no doubt have better luck with information on diet and nutrition and supplements. I live in Canada and the muffins I bought were frozen and available at our local pet store. If you want to check out the website: Canine Cancer: Nutrition and Diet Can be Key Others here like TJ and Rockytola and Madchen's Mom used some form of K-9 Immunity. You might want to check their "posts" over the past several months. I wish you luck and hope that Sabbath starts to enjoy his food again and that you start to feel less stressed and find things that work for your puppy. There is HOPE and once you find a combination of foods and supplements you will notice improvement in Sabbath. DO CHECK WITH YOUR VET RE: nutrition and supplements. Benny would not take the supplements at first and would pick them out of his meal. I then started to put them in fine liverwurst and we called them his "appetizers" and no problem from then onwards. My prayers go out to you and Sabbath. Blessings, Joanne |

First off, welcome and I am so sorry you have to be here.
Secondly, never give up hope. It makes things so much better in the way you are around your beloved pet and they are so in tune with our feelings. Ted's book was a huge encouragement to me,also. The one thing that got Dante his appetite back was the Prednisone I believe, even though we did eventually wean him off of it after he sustained his weight and got used to eating regularly again. Do ask your vet about it, because is does make every dog hungry. Once you get him eating, read up on the supplements all of us have used here. There are a few that seem to be common amongst all of us. Bumping up your dog's immune system is the number one concern AFTER you get him eating again. TJ |
