I am new to this forum. My dog Sally is a Chow/Golden Retriever mix who was a rescue when we got her about 5 years ago. She was around 4 or 5 when we got her, so now she is probably 9 or 10. She was recently diagnosed with bladder cancer. The tumor is at the neck of her bladder, so inoperable. It is terminal, so the vet says. She maybe has a maximum of 6 months. We elected to just have her treated with Piroxicam, an anti-inflammatory which has been shown to help reduce the size of the tumor, although it is not curative. We could have elected her to also receive chemotherapy, but this would only give her another 6 months so we elected not to do that. So far she is acting like she always has except for straining while urinating. Anyone out there who has gone through this with their dog or has had a dog with this diagnosis, it would be great to hear from them. Thanks.

Hi, I hope you find some comfort from this site, you will find a lot of info and support, as im sure your in total shock and are devastated! Im so sorry to here about Sally, all cancers are horrid and bladder cancer is a hard one, as your dog will appear happy and healthy and in her head will not now shes poorly. My Billy had bladder cancer, he was diagnosed in the october, my vet said the norm is 6 months, but its had to tell! he was on piroxicam, he didn't really explain to me what it was and what to expect, partly because i was afraid to ask! and he didnt seem to think there was any hope so his negative approach didnt help just made me more upset! so we did go and see a homoeopathic vet, who was really helpful, she listen and tried to explained to me never give up hope, she also told me to go to and see an oncologist, which we did and they said it was worth a try, mainly i think because he was insured and it was frighteningly expensive!!!! we tried chemo, just 2 sessions, i dont think i would do that again, it doesn't really buy you time and its too stressful, as i had to leave my baby there all day and he wasnt happy! and alas the tumour had spread and we had to send him to heaven last jan, hes been gone 12mnth and it still breaks my heart, as he acted like he always did! just weed a lot more! and he didnt seem to suffer! but his bladder and bowels had been effected.
Go to members lists and go onto Madchens mum and check all her posting as her little girls got bladder cancer and shes doing really well! check our her diet plan that she is giving her baby, you need to give sally lots of supplements to keep her immune system high, pls ask me anything as i know what your going through! i think its only now that im over the shock and can think straight, as when they told me billy had cancer i seem to have cried and cried for 4 months and couldn't think straight, i just buried my head in the sand. My thoughts and prayers are with you both. Alyson |

Hi my Sadie Mae was dagnosed with bladder cancer in October and we have been doing the piroxicam. How is your dog doing. Sadie Mae also has been diagnosed with Addision Disease which means her adrenal glands do not produce cortisol naturally anymore.
