My dog is going through chemo and has had very loose stools for weeks. In addition (sorry...) he has really bad gas... It can clear a room. His dog food is called Instinct and was recommended by his vet. Is there anything I can give him to both fix these issues?
Thanks!

Hi there... sorry about the problems your dog is having. I think the standard remedy for loose stools is boiled rice with some chicken until the stool get firm. I would suggest also putting in some acidopholis (sp?) to help with the digestion of the food. Maybe some plain yogurt, if he will take it. Instinct is good but your little guy is sick and needs foods easy on the gut. The chemo is hard. I'm sure others may have better advice but I would start with this right away. I hope he gets better. The gas means he's not processing the food. The chemo is messing with his bowels. It will get better but he needs easy-to-digest foods right now. Best of luck. Kate

I completely agree with what Kate is saying. You r little guy needs to eat and unfortunately looses stools are a result of the chemo. A very bland diet of white rice and chicken with no OILS might help.
Benny had a bout of diarrhea early on when his food was changed and it was recommended to me to add the supplement Slippery Elm to his diet. That stopped the problem. He gets one capsule every morning in his breakfast. It might work for you but best to talk to your vet before using it. Good luck. Joanne (Benpaws) |

Hi,
A girl who has been helping us with supplements and diet for Benny who has Mast Cell cancer recommended this for bouts of diarrhea. This might help Astro. Joanne (Benpaws) This popular recipe is recommended for dogs and cats suffering from diarrhea, dehydration, heat stress, or physical exhaustion. 2 cups filtered water 1 tablespoon unrefined sea salt 1/4 teaspoon liquid colloidal trace minerals, available at health food stores 1/2 cup unpasteurized local honey Dosage: 1 tablespoon per 5 pounds body weight, every 2 to 3 hours |
