Default How much does chemo cost in uk?

Hi this is probably a random question but if anyone in the uk can give me some idea to how much chemo will cost then it may just give us some hope, My dog Kia had a biopsy last week as she has swolen lymph nodes and the vet says its most probable that she has lymphoma, I am also looking at the holistic alternative as dogs can heal them selves really well, any advice will be great thanks xxx

Hi Clare,
I'm not sure what it costs in the UK but by the time we're finished with Hamlet's protocol, I'll have spent around $6K (not including the holistic vet and meds like anti-nauseau etc.) which included the initial staging tests.
I know that there are a few Brits on my other support group (one specifically for lymphoma dogs undergoing chemo) so I'll throw the question out to them and let you know the response.

Default One Response...

Hi Clare,
Here's one response I received so far:

Hi sorry to hear about your friend, I am also from the uk and shadow started his treatment in january. So far it has cost me about £5000 He is on the mw protocal and has 2 more chemo left. Is she insured? because if she is they should be able to do a direct claim.thats what i did as i didn't have that kind of money.
I was told by the vet that the first couple of months is the most expensive and it really is!
Please let me know if you need to know anything else.

Hope that helps some. I'll forward any additional responses I receive.

Sorry to hear your friend's news - how sad.
Bridie's treatment cost over £8000 in 9 months.
She needs to consult an oncologist and get an estimate based on whatever the issues are for her pup.
Ask again if I can help any more.

I'll keep sending them as I get them.

Default Yet another one...

I went through chemo with my Shola. I completed 13 weeks before unfortunately she came out of remission but the cost came to approx £3,500 in that time. However, if I had known what I know now I would have had most of the treatments carried out at my own Vets and the cost would have been less. I would have used the expertise of the hospital in the initial diagnosis and staging and then had most of the treatment carried out at my Vets as she would not have had to spend as many hours away from us.
If she would like to contact me she is welcome to.

Let me know if you do indeed wish to contact her...or you could just join the other group as well since you are going to do chemo. It's a yahoo group called LymphomaHeartDogs. This site is good for general info but that site is great for specific info related to lymphoma and chemo treatments.

I hear you on the insurance thing. I kick myself every time I leave one of Hamlet's appointments! Lesson learned; I'll be getting insurance for Rufus and any other dogs that may adopt me in the future.

Hiya
We did Chemo at the small animal teaching hospital in liverpool, the most amazing place i have ever been too! it was so busy, i must have lived a sheltered life as i wasnt aware of cancer in dogs or the treatments that is availble, i was humbled, they were so helpfull, they did warm me that its was not curable only hopefully to try delay the cancer that my baby had and unfortunalty we only had 2 visits. I think it cost me about £2000 in total, ie special food, drugs from my vets etc.. Get as much done as you can at your vets if possable, as my vets didnt have the right blood testing machines hence why we also had to spend most of the day there, as they do blood count/cells testing before the chemo (which the Chemo just takes about 20mins) the first visit is always the worst as they had to knock him out for xrays and things, would i do it again? not sure as i often think did the chemo piss the cancer offer so it got worse! as he seemed to go poorly very quickly, i did also see a holistic vet who actually advised me to to the chemo! yet my own vet said dont do it!

Good luck and my prays go to you both in what ever you choose .

Clare,
He's another response from the other support group:

I am near to your friend, being in Cheshire. We are attending the Liverpool Small Animal Hospital on the Wirral. I was told by the oncologist there that the Wisconsin protocol is likely to cost about £3000 for our lurcher. Give her my best wishes.

As well as i know about the matter i will give you the quite clear glimpse about this that you may cost approximate 5000 to 8000 pounds. It also depends on the services quality which do you want to have.
