I have been giving Boomer a 100 mg artemsisin capsule twice a day. A friend from a different dog board sent me a bottle of 200 mg capsules. Can I give him one capsule a day or should I try and divide it into two meals? By the way Boomer weighs 36 pounds.

I don't know anything about dividing Artemisinin pills or capsules.
We started Benny ( he weighed 28 pounds)on one 100 mg. pill of Artemisinin in the morning or right before bedtime, never at mealtime when he got his other supplements. Eventually we were giving him two 100 mg pills daily. Artemisinin is not effective if given with foods that contain "iron" such as meats. One before bedtime in a little cream cheese or organic peanut butter worked well. The pill is bitter. Artemisinin can be given when your dog is on chemo but not if the dog is having radiation because of the levels of iron in the radiation treatments. I would check this all out with an holistic vet or somebody knowledgeable about this supplement. Every dog is different and every cancer is different. I am just recording what we were advised to give to Benny. Hope this helps a little. Joanne Last edited by Benpaws; 08-18-2010 at 12:38 PM. |

Beaglechaser, 200mg for a 36 lb dog is slightly on the higher side but it also depends on what type and stage of cancer. 100 mg arte would be better in one go. You could possibly break it into half only if the tablet contains a half-line in the middle. It would be difficult though to divide the contents of a capsule into two equal portions. Someone has already mentioned that it is not to be given with meals and certainly not with iron-rich food like meat. Arte should preferably be given at night ( 3to4 hrs after the last meal) so that there is no residual iron in the gut lest arte will react there itself before reaching the bloodstream. It should be given with cottage cheese or suspended in milk. A two month gap is required after the last radiation. Also if you are giving it twice then you would have to avoid the anti-oxidants altogether otherwise you can give them, dosed away from the arte in the morning hours. A school of thought also advises not to give anti-oxidants on arte dosing days. In case you are interested more in arte and its derivatives for treatment, you would be advised to join the artemisinin and cancer yahoo group.
