Smile Chica

Chica is 15yrs. old and has a 1 1/2 pd. tumor in her stomach which is pushing her intestines downward. Our vet took Xrays/ultra sound and told us because of her age and condition of her tumor Chemo/Radiation wouldn't help her. We were told of her illness 3 wks ago. We became aware of her illness after a night of vomiting and concern of her not eating( she had lost 30% of her weight ). Since visiting the vet I have read several notes on this site about holistic foods. I am optimistic at the moment because we now have her eating EVO dog food, pumpkin (for bulk). Cottage Cheese with Salmon Oil, and found recipe for ice cream ( yogurt, bananas, water). We give her small portions, she can't wait to eat now. Weighed her tonight and she has gained 1/3rd of a pound. She seems to be her old self for now. So Happy! Any advice would be welcomed. Would appreceite if anyone has experienced this to let us know what to expect next. Thanks!

I make a home cooked mix for Hamlet and add that to his grain free kibble (Hammy gets Wellness Core). He's 75 lbs and gets approx. 1 - 1-1/2 cups with his kibble. It's really easy and he loves it. I lightly cook ground beef (2 lbs) and mix that with pureed canned yams (1-15 oz can, drained, sent through the rice strainer) plus steamed broccoli (1 bag of the steam-in-the-bag microwavable variety) and pour in a can of beef broth. One batch usually lasts the week (for both my boys). Hamlet actually cries/whines while I'm cooking it b/c he can't wait to get some. I also sprinkle a probiotic/digestive enzyme powder (prescribed by our holistic vet) over his supper. Happy cooking! Hope that helps!

As far as supplements, Hammy gets fish oil (Omega-3) capsules daily in addition to a Prilosec in the morning. Hammy has lymphoma so I'd check with your vet b4 adding any supplements. There's a very helpful book by Shawn Messonier called 'The Natural Vet's Guide to Preventing and Treating Cancer' that has an entire section devoted to supplements and herbal remedies; that might be helpful. Good luck!

Meesh, This book sounds great! Going to buy it! Thanks again. It's so nice to know that other dog owners really do care! Betty (if I can be of any help to you I'll try but this is so new to me (our first little doggie & experience with cancer).

It's all new to most of us. All we can do is share the infomation and experiences that have worked and those that haven't with those who are newer than ourselves. Best of luck!

Default Tanner

Hello
Thank you for sharing your recipe. I am definately going to give it a try. I am going to purchase the book right away as well. I am always searching for new information about how to care for my beloved Tanner.
Tanner (a heeler lab mix) was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma in January.Since then I have been on a quest to give him the absoulte best care I can. His cancer can not be cured but perhaps I can extend his time with me. He was given 8 weeks and it has now been 5 months for which I feel truley blessed - but I want more!
Tanner went through radiation and chemo and is now on oral low dose chemo drugs. I completely changed his diet, water, and added supplements. So far he is energetic and eating well which makes it easy to be in denial. Tanner has a checkup tomorrow so kep your fingers, toes, and paws crossed for us.
My heart goes out to all who have to face this terrible disease. Hang in there and know there are alot of us out here who understand and feel your pain.

Hi Wendy,
Best of luck tomorrow. It sounds as though Tanner has already beaten the odds and that's wonderful!

Wink Tanner

Hi Wendy,

I am keeping everything crossed for Tanner. I think you have "beaten the odds" and will have Tanner with you for a very long time.

Love to get this kind of news here.

Hugs,
Joanne & Shadow
