Dear Kathy,
MY dog Benny has Mast Cell Tumour on his right side and after much searching on the internet I found "an angel" who has helped me select the best supplements for Benny. One of these is Artemisinin. A friend of hers has breast cancer and has been on Artemisinin throughout her chemo treatments and the doctors have now said she is at "low risk" of dying from the cancer and feel it is due to the Artemisinin. Here is what I have learned about this supplement: Artemisinin, which is also known as Sweet Annie, is a type of wormwood. Although Artemisinin has been targeted for osteosarcoma, I have been recommending its use to owners who have dogs with a variety of cancers (mammary cancer, lymphoma, mast cell, fibrosarcoma), and I also give it to some older dogs for fatty tumours and lipomas. Artemisinin has been a miracle for some dogs. The use of Artemisinin is supported by veterinarians. At the Washington Cancer Institute Department of Orthopedic Oncology at Georgetown University Medical Centre, they have been doing a project to determine whether Artemisinin is an effective compound in the treatment of canine osteosarcoma, based on the positive results in other studies. In a number of cases where I have used Artemisinin (with vet approval), the dogs have beaten the odds, e.g., the life expectancy the vets provide, based on their own cases and research. Fat improves its assimilation. Now, Artemisinin cannot be used alongside radiation, but it is compatible with chemotherapy. There was a study done in Germany in 2002. Artemisinin was tested in combination with 22 chemotherapy drugs, and it was found that the Artemisinin enhanced the drug's effectiveness, when taken several hours after the chemotherapy treatment ends, e.g., chemo in the morning, and Artemisinin at night. I hope this is helpful to you. Joanne (Benpaws): |

I am very fortunate to be able to get this particular supplement free of charge from a friend who has studied herbal medicine after she lost her Golden Retriever to lymphoma in 2001. We met online.
I am sure that some Health Food Stores also carry it. I just checked the INTERNET and found this site which might be helpful to you: Nutritional and herbal supplements from Better Health International Good luck. Joanne |

I'm really interested in what you've explained about Artemisinin, but my Jack Russell, Jess had radiation treatment last year for a nasal tumour...she's not receiving any treatment at present, would it be safe to give her Artemisinin now and would it be suitable for this type of cancer?
Thanks, Liz (TheDJD) |

DearLiz,
I just checked a website on Artemisinin and this is the section I read re: radiation and Artemisinin which might help you. I am not a professional so maybe you should get in touch with an holistic vet or somebody who knows for sure. Hope this helps. Good luck. Joanne (Benpaws) RADIATION Radiation releases iron stored in cancer cells into surrounding tissue. Therefore, it is recommended that Artemisinin be used before radiation treatments, be discontinued during radiation treatments, and not resumed until two months after the last radiation treatment. |

So Joanne, How much of the Artemisinin would one use on say a 25lb dog? My Waldo had a Mast Cell tumor removed in January of this year. (stage 4) He has not had a recurrence... I'm wondering if I could use this for a period of time as a preventative? Or, in what ways is it advisable to use? I've noticed many folks commenting that their dogs have had a recurrence of the Mast Cell a year later. I sure do not want that. Thanks so much for all the info.

Hi Kate,
I just checked a website on "flaxseed oil and the amounts" and came across this site which might be of help to you: All Cottage Cheese And Flaxseed Oil Dose Information messages I think 1 tablespoon would be fine for your little dog. I sure hope your puppy remains in remission. My prayers are with you! Benny had a STAGE 2 Mast Cell on his side removed last November, was given a clean bill of health in June and then it returned in July. The first surgery left "dirty margins" and Benny was one of the unlucky ones. Good luck. This is a great place to be able to come and share. God Bless. Joanne ( Benpaws) |

Hi Joanne,
I hope Ben has had a good day. Are you giving Artemisinin to him? If so have you had any results good or bad? My holistic vet had never heard of it but did some research at my request and we are starting Neeky on it tomorrow. She has not had chemo or radiation but is on a homeopathic remedy, fish oil, coconut oil, flax oil with cottage cheese (what an oily dog!) raw food, no grains, some medicinal mushrooms, an antioxidant and vitamins. Is there anything obviously missing that you would give with all this? I am a bit concerned about the large amount of oil but so far she seems to be feeling pretty good. I'll know more on Wednesday when she gets another blood test. Praying for a good report. Robin |
